Lost Cells tells the story of a promise. The preservation of stem cells from a newborn baby's umbilical cord for future treatment of rare diseases. This marketing pitch convinced hundreds of thousands of parents across Europe to turn to the Swiss company Cryosave, a market leader. In September 2019, the company goes bankrupt, leaving the genetic material to vanish into thin air, picked up by hypothetical buyers in Poland. For the parents, a quest begins: where have the stem cells gone? Lost Cells investigates an opaque world where the human body is traded like a commodity.
